Dilute are currently working on initial sound design and music score for an exciting new project for the Wii. For obvious reasons we can't say too much, but we are now in the process of initial recording and scoring of the sound track and sound design. We'll keep you posted when there's more information available.
Talented alternative act, theOracleboy were recorded by us in yet another church, this time near Peterborough! All the elements of the track 'Clovers' were recorded in the church to provide the ethereal sound needed. With artist such as My Bloody Valentine, The Stone Roses and Pink Floyd mentioned as possible influences, the church seemed an ideal location to recreate sounds of the past.
Our portable recording rig and collection of old school microphones appeared to do the trick, with the label and artist being very happy with the result. The track has already been played on XFM, is available from HMV and is downloadable from iTunes UK amongst other digital outlets. Check out theOracleboy and WCS Records
The Dilute sound design team headed off to Basingstoke to record the re-enactment of a famous 17th century battle. With a combination of portable recording systems using a Fostex FR2 Field recorder, a HD Minidisc and a couple of top notch MS stereo microphones, Dilute had exclusive access to the battlefield and surrounding areas to record the sounds. Various background, musket fire, cannon fire and general fighting sounds were captured over the period of 2 days.
The audio will be used for an up and coming project as well as in our extensive audio effects library.
In association with Creative Labs and ACM, Dilute Recordings have recorded, produced and mixed 3 of the 6 tracks provided as sample tracks on a selection of Creative MP3 players. Tracks by artists, Big Wednesday, theOracleboy and Seasons End were all placed on a variety of new MP3 players.
When you buy a Creative MP3 player such as the Zen, you can have a listen to a variety of tunes by young contemporary artists. All the artists were recorded and mixed in completely different, independent commercial sessions then compiled together and given away free on devices such as the Zen Micro, Neeon and Nano Plus. Dilute are proud to be championing new music and new technology in this way and we are in the process of producing more music as we speak. We'll keep you posted.
As part of our constant commitment to producing 'old school' quality recordings, we were asked to record and mix the 500-year Tallis commemoration concert at St Alfeges church in Greenwhich in late November. With their van full of ‘sexy’ mics and pre-amps our team of Engineers and support staff trundled up to Greenwhich from sunny Guildford to record what turned out to be avery prestigious event.
Using classic B&K, Neumann and AKG mic's combined with some Neve and Neumann mic pre’s, we decided to use the Decca Tree microphone technique with a little modification for potential surround use. Luckily the venue was ideal for recording, as the vestry proved to be a fantastically soundproofed and acoustically 'sound' (excuse the pun) environment for monitoring.
We initially did a 'recce' a few weeks prior to get some measurements and a feel for the venue, then we were luckily allowed to use the previous days rehearsal as a line check, balance and testing session for the Saturday night performance. We returned on the Saturday, nailed everything down (with gaffer and cable ties) crossed our fingers and recorded the entire 2-hour performance.
As part of our ongoing relationship with game developers and publishers, Dilute was ask to create some sound effect elements for the Trackmania Sunrise game for the PC. We were asked to create a series of car engine, crashes and surface sounds for use in the exciting game play. Audio elements such as engine revs, idle sounds, car crashes and bangs and a series of 'car over surfaces' sounds such as snow, wooden bridge, gravel and Tarmac were created.
Using a combination of field recorded elements and library material, programs such as Protools and Logic Audio were used to layer the various individual elements utilising the DAW multitrack functions. Many of the files needed some 'tweaking' using compression and E.Q, while others were turned into loops. Files were provided in a variety of formats and sizes to aid the developer's audio department with implementation and memory issues.
In a recording session based at the famous Great Linford Manor Studios (Jamiroquai, PJ Harvey etc). Dilute recorded a Swing and Jazz session with Guitar Amp legend Jim Marshall, Guitar legend Bert Weeden and Dudley Moore's backing band of 15 years through the classic EMI Neve Console. Over 20 tracks were recorded in a weeklong session using traditional jazz and swing microphone techniques to get that authentic sound.
We used some of our own mics (Neumann SM69, AKG C60 x2 etc) with some of GLM's own classics, while GLM's ballroom was integral to the warm authentic sound that we achieved.
All backing tracks were recorded live with an occasional need to edit between takes. The backing band was fantastic! Great drums and Double bass (and yes we did get some D&B samples ;)
